Hyperbaric medicine (HBO) is available
The
Wound Healing Center at AMH is the only one of its kind in the
Mohawk Valley – and the first in all of Northeastern New
York – to provide
hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of
certain hard-to-heal wounds. Delivery of this therapy involves
a patient breathing 100% oxygen while inside a pressurized
chamber. This stimulates a number of physiological responses in
the cells and tissues, promoting wound healing.
Who
Can the Wound Healing Center Help?
The Wound Healing Center can help when a wound is not healing as
quickly or as completely as you'd like. We often see people who
have diabetes, circulatory problems, suppressed immune systems,
cancer, burns, and other conditions that stand in the way of the
body's natural ability to heal. The use of certain medications
can also be an obstacle to the healing of a wound. At the Wound
Healing Center at Amsterdam Memorial, we can uncover the reasons
why a wound hasn't healed, despite months or even years of
conventional treatments.
What You Can Expect
When you come to the Wound Healing Center at Amsterdam Memorial,
the wound healing doctors, nurses and therapists will evaluate
your wound and review your medical history and general health.
You may have special tests to provide us with important
information about the flow of blood, tissue oxygenation and
whether or not infection is complicating the healing process.
Our team of wound healing specialists will develop a treatment
plan based on your special needs. Treatment programs can last up
to 16 weeks, during which time our specialists will monitor,
document and assess your progress. Your willingness to cooperate
and work with us is one of the key ingredients for success: we
encourage you to ask questions, listen and follow the
instructions of our wound healing specialists.
Your treatment doesn't end when you leave
the Wound Healing Center. We will teach you how to take care of
your wound at home and how to prevent future problems once the
wound has healed. Also, as a service of the Amsterdam Memorial
Health Care System, the Wound Healing Center is backed by the
comprehensive services of one of the area's finest health care
systems. That means you'll be able to participate in education
programs and have access to emergency care, primary care and
specialty medical and surgical services designed to get you
healthy and keep you well.
